Hi, I’m Jules, owner of Redwoods & Waves. I take East Bay dogs out of the city and into the Oakland redwoods for quiet trails and refreshing forest time.

I take three dogs at a time, Tuesday to Friday, for an hour of hiking, with door-to-door pickup. I use positive reinforcement, treats, and a post-hike healthy snack break to help your pup come home happily tired.

Most hikes are in two different redwood spots in the Oakland hills. Once in a while, I take pups to the bayfront in Emeryville for the ocean breeze and views (hence Redwoods and “Waves” haha). I can pick up your dog while you are at work or do a hand-off.

The total adventure window is about 1.5–3 hours, including door-to-door pick-up, depending on your house’s location from the trail, traffic, etc.

$65 per hike

I recommend that dogs go at least twice a week so they get the most out of the exercise, learn manners, and bond with their pack, but they will still benefit from a once-a-week redwoods experience.

Includes:

• Door-to-door pick up and drop-off

• On-leash trail time with treats

• Post-hike healthy snack break

• Photo or video update

Hikes are on-leash, with off-leash time for dogs with positive play manners and recall. I practice recall one at a time on a 15-ft line so dogs can explore while staying safe.

Dogs ride secured in the Sleepypod Clickit Sport, the only dog harness that's been independently crash-tested and passed (if your pup doesn't have one, I can send a link). Fewer dogs mean your pup is properly secured in their own seat.

Why the redwoods for dogs?

Studies show sniffing in nature calms dogs’ nervous systems, while the forest floor cushions their joints and paws. Everything about the air, birds, and trees speaks to positive mental stimulation and calm for animals.

Doggy daycare, walking on concrete, and walking in huge, crowded packs are all solutions, but none of them address the core nature of dogs, who often enjoy less chaotic, natural settings and a familiar, familial pack.

Most modern humans intend to take their dogs into nature more often, but in reality, they don’t have 1.5-3 hours available during a busy workweek and want to rest on the weekends. They may also have mobility issues or may have limited opportunities for their pups to socialize with other dogs.

Every dog would benefit from spending time in nature and the outdoors twice a week, regardless of their routine. One day in the forest can be so enriching that it could easily replace a day at doggy daycare. I’m here to make it happen.

Meet Jules

Hi there! I’m Jules, founder of Redwoods and Waves. After years of dog sitting and walking for friends, as well as caring for my own pup, I realized my favorite part was taking dogs on outdoor adventures, so I turned that passion into a business. I'm an East Bay Regional Parks-permitted dog walker, Pet CPR & First Aid-certified, and fully insured.

I’m currently in school and on the path to becoming a therapist. I also majored in sociology and have won an award for my research. I bring my social scientist lens and understanding to the way I care for every pup, researching dog behavior, crash-safe dog harnesses, and even getting specific about dog treat ingredients and paw wipes to ensure your dog has the safest, best possible experience. I also drive a hybrid Subaru to reduce my environmental impact.

Over the years, I’ve also worked with professional dog trainers to learn best practices in walking and behavior, including positive reinforcement and reward-based training. I’ve explored trails across the Bay Area to find the most scenic routes.

I also take dogs on select trails that limit group sizes, creating a calmer, more special experience that most walkers can’t offer.

I always do a trial hike, so if you don’t know how your dog will do, I can report back.
